Chevrolet Bolt EV Offers 'One-Pedal' Driving Modes

The Chevrolet Bolt EV will allow drivers to maximize their range with selectable one-pedal driving modes.

According to the American automaker, one-pedal driving “combines the highest available level of regenerative braking, which captures otherwise lost energy from deceleration and sends it back to the Bolt EV battery pack for the greatest total vehicle range.” Thanks to the aid of software controls, regen braking even allows the driver to stop the Chevrolet Bolt EV without having to use the brake pedal in certain driving conditions.

In total, there are four selectable modes that offer progressively stronger levels of regen braking. Drivers can operate the vehicle in “Drive” and ease off the accelerator, or using the “Regen on Demand” paddle on the back of the steering wheel. There is also the ability to operate in “Low” and easing off the accelerator or using the Regen on Demand paddle.

The first option offers the lowest level of regen braking and requires the use of the brake pedal to bring the Chevy Bolt EV to a complete stop. The remaining three modes allow the driver to stop in certain conditions without having to use the brake pedal.

Engineers found that one-pedal driving can add up to five-percent range to the Bolt EV, which is estimated to provide 200 miles or more of all-electric range.

“Bolt EV customers who want an engaging driving experience will love the thrill of one-pedal driving,” said Bolt EV Chief Engineer Josh Tavel. “They will be able to tailor the vehicle to their preferred driving style and maximize their range.”
