Buick is Teasing its First Plug-In Hybrid for China

Buick is teasing a new concept car, the Velite, which points the way towards GM’s electrified future in China. 

This car will debut at the upcoming Guangzhou auto show, powered by a plug-in hybrid powertrain. It previews an entire lineup of electrified vehicles that will be sold under the Buick Blue sub-brand in China.

Specific details haven’t been shared, with Buick simply saying that a gasoline direct-injection engine will be paired with Buick’s latest “modular intelligent electric drive system.”

Based on the styling seen in the photo, it is likely Buick’s version of the Chevy Volt. The powertrain could also be borrowed from the new Cadillac CT6 plug-in.

So while this product may not be all new to us, it signals Buick’s push into the world of electrification, with the brand promising more plug-in hybrid and hybrid vehicles are on the way.

There is no indication that any of these electrified Buicks will be sold in the U.S., but those decisions can always change.
