3.9L Ferrari V8 Takes International Engine of the Year Honors

Ferrari’s twin-turbocharged 3.9-liter V8 engine has taken top honors in the International Engine of the Year awards for the second consecutive year.

The 3902cc engine is found in the Ferrari 488 GTB and 488 Spider and also in the California T and GTC4Lusso T in a slightly smaller 3855cc format. Engine of the Year judges said the eight-cylinder sets “a new benchmark for turbo-charged engines,” and praised it for its lack of turbo lag and progressive delivery of torque and horsepower across the rev range.

“This is only the second time in the history of the IEOTYA that such a powerful performance engine has taken the overall honours two years consecutively and won the most coveted, outright IEOTYA title,” said Engine of the Year Awards founder, Tony Robinson. “The Ferrari V8 is all about amazing power delivery, precision, driveability and a wonderful soundtrack, too.”

The 3.9-liter was actually the recipient of multiple awards, taking not only the overall award, but also winning the 3.0-liter to 4.0-liter category and the performance engine category. Ferrari’s 6.3-liter V12 was also recognized by the Engine of the Year jury, with the engine receiving top honors in the ‘Above 4-liter’ category.

Ford was another notable nameplate included in this year’s Engine of the Year results. The automaker’s 1.0-liter EcoBoost three-cylinder was named the best engine in the under 1.0-liter category, beating a stiff competitor in the way of Volkswagen’s 1.0-liter engine. It marks the sixth consecutive year the 1.0-liter EcoBoost has won the category. Additionally, the tiny 999cc motor took the overall award for three consecutive years from 2012 to 2014.
