The internet is moving into our cars, with many automakers are fitting mobile hotspots to allow owners easy wireless connectivity anywhere they go.
Buick is one of many nameplates in the General Motors family to get the new technology, which will be arriving in dealerships this summer in the 2015 LaCrosse, Regal, Verano and Encore. Each model will come with OnStar 4G LTE hardware fitted as standard equipment, though data packages will cost an additional monthly fee.
Pricing for those data packages has not been revealed yet, though GM has said it will partner with AT&T to provide the service. In many Audi vehicles, AT&T is already providing data packages, which are priced at $100 for a 5 gigabyte package that lasts six months or $500 for a 30 gigabyte plan that lasts for 30 months (two and a half years).
Using the in-car hotspot, passengers will be able to access the web on various devices, and owners will be able to download and use apps such as streaming online radio though the vehicle’s infotainment unit. Another benefit is the vehicle health app, which will pull diagnostic information from the car and allow owners to book a service appointment straight from the vehicle.
