It wouldn’t be an intense motorsport event without a scary accident.

After claiming the pole for the 2017 Indianapolis 500, Scott Dixon ended up not being able to finish the race after getting involved in a crash with Jay Howard. The crash happened when Howard lost control on lap 53 of the race, with Dixon slamming into him before flying into the air and crashing on top of an inside retaining wall. Dixon’s car was torn apart as a result of the accident, but the tub did its job remaining intact and both drivers were fortunately able to walk away without any injuries.

The race was stopped for 18 minutes under a red flag and both drivers have already been checked, cleared, and released following the accident. It caps off a strange week for Dixon, who was also robbed at gunpoint while in a Taco Bell drive-thru, just hours after claiming the pole.
