Toyota Creates a Dream Toy for Adults

Toyota has brought together the iconic Tonka brand with its Hilux pickup truck.

The creation is officially called the Toyota Hilux Tonka Concept. It’s a high-riding off-roader created to celebrate HiLux’s breakthrough in becoming Australia’s best-selling vehicle last year.

Conceived, designed and assembled by designers and engineers at Toyota Australia’s product planning and development division, the custom Hilux features a black-and-yellow livery and an increased ride height of six inches. Other modifications include a high-riding axle, heavy-duty suspension and 35-inch tires, allowing it to power over all sorts of rugged terrain.

The team started with the top-of-the-range Hilux model, an SR5 double cab powered by a 2.8-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. There’s also a new front bar that’s compatible with the truck’s safety systems, while the hood sports a carbon fiber skin and has an aggressive power bulge and air scoops. Naturally since it’s an off-roader, there’s LED lighting in the bar and roof pod.

A rugged bash plate made from 6mm thick alloy helps protect the sump and other vital components while tubular side rails offer protection for the body and chassis. Toyota says nearly everything behind the cabin has been changed, including a new tailgate with an integrated rear spoiler and two air vents for optimal airflow. Rather than using a handle to release the tailgate, there is now a durable, lightweight strap.

Inside the tub, a removeable tubular frame keeps all extra gear in place, which includes diesel fuel cans. There’s also storage boxes to house off-road gear, while a fire extinguisher, axe, shovel and high-lift jack have also been fitted.
