Tesla owners are once again eligible for free Supercharging.
Late last year, Tesla announced those who order a vehicle after January 1, 2017, will only receive 400 kWh of Supercharging credits for free each year. At the time, the automaker also said all existing owners and those who order before January 1, 2017 and take delivery before April 1, 2017 will continue to receive Supercharging for free.
But the company has had a change of heart and is bringing back free, unlimited use of its Supercharging, but there’s a catch. Those looking to purchase a new Model S or Model X today will have to get a referral code from current owners in order to receive free Supercharging. And only the first five uses of the referral code are eligible for the promotion.

With Tesla introducing a promotion that makes new buyers eligible for free Supercharging with a referral code, it only makes sense that the automaker retroactively credits current owners. That means those who purchased a vehicle during the period of time when Supercharging wasn’t free, can now take advantage of free Supercharging. In addition, any Supercharging payments made have been automatically refunded.
It’s worth noting that free Supercharging will not transfer to the next owner if you’re looking to buy a used Tesla. Also, Model 3 orders are not eligible for the promotion. If you’re a current Model S or Model X owner and want to purchase a new Model S or Model X, you will automatically receive free, unlimited Supercharging (without needing to use a referral code).
“We heard from our customers that free, unlimited Supercharging was one of their favorite reasons to refer a friend to buy a Tesla, so we’re bringing it back for Model S and Model X owners through our referral program, which we update periodically,” said Tesla in a statement. “Beginning today, existing owners can give free, unlimited Supercharging to up to five friends by sharing their referral code, and all existing Tesla owners who purchase a new Model S or Model X will receive free, unlimited Supercharging too.”
