Windsor, Ontario’s new battery manufacturing plant continues to take shape. Now, we’ve got a name for the alliance of LG Energy Solutions and Stellantis that make up the new plant. Also, Stellantis has announced a product to be made in Windsor, that will be electrified.
Earlier this week, LG Energy Solutions and Stellantis announced a company name for its new joint venture: NextStar energy. Daniels Lee has been appointed as CEO, and the new company has committed more than $5 billion CAD ($4.1 billion USD), to ensure the plant’s success. The plant is planned to have more than 45 GWh of capacity, and create more than 2,500 new jobs for the Windsor area.
The batteries for those vehicles will likely go into the products that will be made just down the road, at the Windsor assembly plant. Also this week, Stellantis announced it will be retooling the Windsor assembly plant, which currently produces the Chrysler Voyager, Pacifica, and Dodge Grand Caravan. This plant will produce Stellantis’s STLA Large EV platform.
Stellantis wasn’t clear which vehicles will ride on the new platform, but it did say that a production version of the Airflow concept will use this platform. Other sources speculate that the platform will be used for the Dodge Charger and Challenger replacements, but Stellantis has not confirmed this. STLA Large is supposed to be capable of up to 500 miles of driving range.
Stellantis aims for 50 percent of its sales in North America, to be EV. The retooling of the Windsor assembly plant and construction of a new battery plant in Windsor is part of its “Dare Forward 2030” long-term electrification strategy.
