It looks like the Sony car is a go or at least something like it, will come soon. Honda has finalized a deal with Sony, to make EVs by 2025.
Back in 2020, Sony previewed a running, driving, EV concept, called the Vision-S. The sleek-looking electric sedan came seemingly left field, but Sony was adamant that it would likely never produce the Vision-S, and it wasn’t clear if the company would ever venture into transportation outside of a one-off proof-of-concept.
Well, it looks like Sony’s found a dedicated partner for its way forward in transportation – Honda. In a new joint venture, called Sony Honda Mobility, the two behemoths have partnered up to build electric cars. The venture will be split 50/50, with Sony focusing on “imaging, sensing, telecommunications, and entertainment.” Honda will focus on the car engineering, manufacturing, and aftersales service part.
The joint venture will be based in Tokyo, and currently is still subject to regulatory approval from the Japanese government. Still, the venture has named Yasuhide Mizuno, a managing senior officer at Honda, the CEO of the new joint venture. A vice president of Sony, Izumi Kawanishi, will be the joint venture’s COO. Automotive News Europe reports that Honda CEO Toshihiro Mibe claims the joint venture “is a small, but important step in trying out new business models for an industry under siege by change.”
This joint venture comes on the heels of Honda’s huge plan to invest more than $37 billion USD over the next ten years in electrification. The Sony Honda Mobility venture will likely influence future Honda EV development, whether that means the Sony Vision-S will be produced, remains an unclear long shot.
