CARS.COM — Smart's electric ForTwo was redesigned for 2017, and when it goes on sale this summer, the coupe version will start at $24,550, including destination but excluding any applicable federal electric-car tax credits — around $1,000 less than the outgoing model. The convertible model will start at $28,750 and be the only electric convertible on the market.

Model-year 2017 upgrades include a more powerful powertrain, additional convenience features and a higher top speed. Power comes from a 17.6-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery and 80-horsepower electric motor. Speed is limited to 81 mph for either coupe or convertible, and range is up to 80 miles according to Smart. The previous model was rated to travel 68 miles on a charge and had a top speed of around 78 mph.

Smart says the new model has a faster AC charging time thanks to a higher-power onboard charger. Filling up from a standard 120-volt household outlet will take 22 hours, but it's only about 2.5 hours with a 240-volt system — around twice as fast as its predecessor.

Cruise control is a newly standard feature; other new options include an exclusive Electric Green tridion cell color and a Climate Package that includes heated seats and a heated steering wheel.
