Today we’re focusing on a red, white and blue comparison, possibly with a little gray thrown in from all the tire smoke. Two great sports machines are facing off in a no-holds-barred tussle that’s sure to burn copious amounts of high-octane gasoline.
Starting off with the Viper, this big, bad Dodge is powered by a monstrous engine. With a full 10 cylinders, this over-head valve lump displaces an almost unfathomable 8.4-liters – that’s a full 512 cubic inches of internal-combustion fury for those of you who haven’t gone metric yet.
This beastly engine delivers the goods, cranking out 645 horsepower with 600 lb-ft of torque. Interestingly, despite a having a stroke of nearly four inches it’s still capable of spinning to 6,400 RPM. A six-speed manual is the only transmission offered in this gnarly Dodge.
In comparison, the Chevy Corvette seems almost placid, like it’s not actively trying to kill you with every rotation of its crankshaft.
Under that long, sloping hood the “regular” ‘Vette features a 6.2-liter small-block V8. This engine delivers up to 460 ponies and 465 lb-ft of torque when fitted with the optional performance exhaust system. Sure, that’s plenty of power to get you into deep trouble, but it’s a far cry from the Viper’s output. For more oomph you can always opt for the Z06 model, which features a supercharged version of this engine that offers 650 horses.
Unlike its rival, this Chevy offers a choice of transmission. Drivers can choose between a seven-speed manual or an automatic with eight forward ratios. How about that?
