There are some significant changes heading to the new Mercedes-Benz GLS full-sized SUV.
Expected to arrive as a 2019 model year, the next-generation Mercedes GLS will ride on the new MHA platform that will result in noticeable weight savings. The architecture will also benefit rear-seat passengers with additional headroom and legroom. For the German automaker however, the new platform allows the GLS to take advantage of hybrid powertrains, as well as the new inline-six engines that are expected to become the norm for the brand.
The new CLS, which debuted at the 2017 L.A. Auto Show, features the first of the new inline-six cylinder engines, with a 3.0-liter turbocharged unit outputting 362 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque in the four-door coupe.

Of course there will also be high-performance AMG variants for the GLS and it will likely have two different output versions, like other AMG 63 models. Rumors suggest a Mercedes-Maybach version might also be in the works, serving as a direct competitor to the Range Rover SVAutobiography and the Bentley Bentayga.
Mercedes-Benz will want to keep the GLS fresh in the coming years, especially since BMW is getting ready to introduce the X7.
