At a surprise reveal of the 2017 Camaro ZL1 last week, Chevrolet took members of the media for a spin it its latest high-powered muscle car.

We were lucky enough to ride along with Camaro lead development engineer Aaron Link as he pushed the 2017 Camaro ZL1 around the track located at Spring Mountain Motorsports Park in Pahrump, Nevada.

The ZL1 features a 6.2-liter supercharged V8 that makes an estimated 640 horsepower and 640 lb-ft of torque. As you can hear in the video, the supercharger whine is quite prominent, but hard to get enough of. All that power is sent to the rear wheels through a six-speed manual or a ten-speed automatic.

You’ll notice that the car is remarkably flat during cornering thanks to the standard magnetic ride suspension.

This new ZL1, like the standard Camaro, now uses the Alpha platform, which allows for some serious weight savings. The ZL1 also sports enhanced cooling and aerodynamics that are catered for customers looking to take their muscle car to the track. After several sessions, the ZL1’s rotors were glowing orange from the heat caused by the six-piston Brembo brakes.

Expect more details on the ZL1 to come out next week during the New York Auto Show.
