Jaguar Land Rover to Start Using BMW V8 Engines

Future Jaguar Land Rover models could be powered by BMW V8 engines.

reports that BMW will sell its twin-turbo V8 engines to Jaguar Land Rover. BMW currently has a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 engine that churns out between 450 and 600 horsepower, depending on which vehicle it is in, and rumor has it a leaner, stronger and torquier 4.0-liter engine is in development. It is likely that Jaguar Land Rover will use the smaller, 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine on its performance-oriented vehicles rather than the existing 4.4-liter mill.

The move makes sense for Jaguar Land Rover, which has invested into its new Ingenium modular engine family that is based on a four-cylinder engine. From there, Jaguar Land Rover is developing inline-three (for use in hybrids) and inline-six engines, which means it will need to source a V8 from another automaker. And since V8s are slowly giving way to smaller inline-six and V6 engines, BMW could use a partner to help justify producing the larger engines.
