Chevrolet has just trademarked ‘ZR1,’ signaling the return of the iconic Corvette model.
The new trademark is filed for use on automobiles, and it will no doubt show up on a Corvette model. The real question is, what will the new ZR1 be?
Rumors strongly point towards the new ZR1 packing a mid-engine, something that has been talked about in the Corvette for years. Providing power will likely be a supercharged V8, packing somewhere around 700 ponies. Other possibilities for the ZR1 include electric motors in the front wheels, along with an entry-level twin-turbo V6 powertrain.
The previous Corvette ZR1 packed 638 horsepower and tons of features to make it a performer including carbon fiber body panels and a rear-mounted transmission.

The design of the car will have to change to incorporate the new mid-mounted engine, while it will certainly be a low-volume, niche product. The new ZR1 is expected to arrive by the end of 2016 as a 2017 model year vehicle, though nothing has been officially confirmed by GM.
Whatever the new ZR1 is, we’re sure that it won’t be boring!
