The successor to the Toyota Supra and the BMW Z4 has been spotted testing.
Jointly developed by Toyota and BMW, this sports car is likely to come with a BMW engine and chassis mated to some sort of Toyota hybrid system. The car seen in the photos is said to be the new BMW based on its soft-top roadster design, a departure from the previous car’s hardtop convertible roof.
The new Z4, which may be called the Z5, will offer a range of BMW engines along with a hybrid model and will be sized to compete with the Porsche Boxster and Mercedes-Benz SLC. It could also be a soft-top only car, a move that would help to further differentiate it from the Supra.

The Supra is said to offer a BMW inline six-cylinder engine mated to a hybrid system to make over 500 horsepower while a dual-clutch automatic might be the only transmission available. Toyota wants the Supra to compete with the Porsche 911 and the Mercedes-AMG GT. Styling for Toyota’s sports car will borrow heavily from the FT-1 Concept.
The new BMW Z4 is expected to show up in 2018 as a 2019 model while the Supra should show up by 2020.
