The Chevrolet Volt is the first plug-in vehicle to sell 100,000 units in the U.S.

Beating out the Nissan Leaf, Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid and the Tesla Model S as the first plug-in vehicle to reach the 100,000-unit milestone in the U.S., the Chevrolet Volt has become an attractive option with the second-generation model offering fuel economy of 106 MPGe and an EPA-estimated 53 miles of all-electric driving.

In making the announcement, Chevrolet also shared some interesting statistics on how 100,000 Volts have impacted the U.S. According to the company, since sales of the Volt began, owners have driven almost 1.5-billion miles in EV mode out of a total 2.5-billion cumulative miles. If you were to base it on an average new car fuel economy of 25.3 mpg, Volt drivers have saved nearly 58-million gallons of fuel.

“The Chevrolet Volt delivers not just a fun driving experience behind the wheel, but has become the first vehicle with plug-in electrification technology to truly become mainstream,” said Steve Majoros, director of marketing, Chevrolet Cars and Crossovers. “Not only is the Volt a class-creator, it serves as the foundation of a Chevrolet electric family that will soon add the first long-range, affordable EV available to customers across the U.S., the Chevrolet Bolt EV.”
