The 2017 Chevrolet SS will be discontinued after the 2017 model year.
The news doesn’t come as a huge surprise, as the sport sedan never sold in significant numbers, but the confirmation came from Alan Batey, head of GM North America at the 2017 Detroit Auto Show. The Chevrolet SS is a rebadged Holden VF Commodore and Holden will cease its production in Australia later this year and it appears the American automaker currently has no plans to replace the rear-drive sedan.
“We decided in small numbers we’d introduce the SS, because we could at a pretty low cost and it has been really well received,” he said. “Obviously, it’s unlikely there is anything to follow because of what is going on in Australia. It was an optimistic play from our perspective and it’s played out well and been a nice addition to the range. It’s not mainstream. It’s small volume.”

Many believed the Chevrolet SS would get axed once GM announced it would be shutting the doors on Holden manufacturing in Australia. And considering the declining sports sedan segment and the rise of crossovers and SUVs, it’s no surprise the American automaker is focusing on new models like the Chevrolet Traverse that was introduced in Detroit. The SS is widely considered to be a future classic car because of its rarity in the U.S., its sporty driving dynamics, and the fact it was still offered with a manual transmission.
