With its plug-in hybrid design, gorgeous looks and high-tech features, the BMW i8 is lacking only one thing: more power. Well BMW is reportedly beefing up its environmentally friendly sports car offering.

The report comes from Auto Express who says they have an insider familiar with the matter. The BMW i8 currently uses two electric motors and a 1.5-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine to put out a combined 362-hp. Most of that power comes from the tiny three-pot, but apparently BMW is looking at replacing that unit with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder model. Expect the new car to be badged the i8S

That would boost power up to about 450 ponies, which when paired to the BMW i8’s lightweight carbon fiber structure would make it really fly. While the new engine would likely add weight, the report suggests that BMW will strip out the interior and use unpainted carbon fiber to counteract the additional pounds. The car will also get some other stand out touches to differentiate it from the standard i8. Some design elements could be from the recently announced 3.0 CSL Hommage concept.

Apparently BMW has been measuring the success of high-priced, low-volume specialty cars from Aston Martin and Ferrari, and is looking to cash in on buyers envy for exclusivity.

Interestingly enough, this high-output i8 isn’t expected to be a part of the brand’s M lineup. The company has mentioned in the past that its i and M brands won’t mix.
