The BMW X3 M is being readied as a competitor to the Mercedes-AMG GLC43.

After catching the next-generation BMW X3 testing, spy photographers have now snapped images of the new high-performance BMW X3 M that has been seen testing on public roads in Germany and nearby the company’s M test center outside of Munich. The next-generation BMW X3 will be the first time the German automaker has spawned an M variant for the X3 model, likely to not only compete against the Mercedes-AMG GLC43 but also the upcoming Audi RS Q5 and Porsche Macan.

Although it is heavily camouflaged, we can tell the prototype boasts a sportier front bumper with larger air intakes, side skirts, a rear diffuser, a roof spoiler, larger brakes and wheels. Shooting out the rear are quad exhaust tips, proving that this X3 means serious business.

It’s unclear which powerplant BMW will use on the X3 M, but rumors suggest that it will be a 3.0-liter turbocharged six-cylinder engine with upwards of 500 horsepower. Following the next-generation X3’s debut will be the new BMW X4, which will also lose weight just like the X3. BMW is expected to add an X4 M model to the lineup as well.
