BMW is reaching into the future with its upcoming concept it will show at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas in early January.
BMW will showcase a new system it calls HoloActive Touch, essentially a virtual touchscreen which is displayed in the cockpit. The free-floating display will allow users to control functions with finger gestures and will provide some kind of tactile feedback.
BMW says this is the first time that its functions can be controlled without any physical contact with materials inside the car, though the technology still offers the visible and tangible interaction between driver and vehicle. The virtual touchscreen will control the car’s BMW Connected suite of services along with seamless integration of the personal digital mobility companion.

The images seen are created using reflections, just like with the head-up display. The free-floating screen will appear next to the steering wheel at the same height as the center console. A camera tracks the user’s fingers to determine which function is being activated.
CES media days take place on January 5-8, 2017. will be covering the show live, so check back for more information.
