A new report claims that BMW is planning to resurrect the 8 Series as a pinnacle luxury car to fight the Mercedes-Benz S-Class.

Two different forms are currently being discussed for the car, which will either by a four-door coupe like the 6-Series Gran Coupe, or a classic two-door coupe with a cabriolet version available. A concept version of the car which is supposed to arrive in 2018 should offer some answers to what form it will take.

The car will be built at BMW’s Dingolfing factory in Germany, starting in 2020.

As this will be BMW’s flagship luxury car, it will feature the best in driveline components and mixed material construction that will likely include large amounts of carbon fiber.

BMW wants to better compete with the Mercedes S-Class, which moved over 125,000 units in 2015, compared to just 36,364 sales for the BMW 7 Series (seen above). The S-Class also makes massive profits for Mercedes-Benz, roughly 30,000 Euros per car sold, a driving factor for BMW jumping into this segment.
