The Alpina B5 Touring is the next best thing to a possible BMW M5 wagon.

BMW’s German competitors all offer a high-performance wagon like the Audi RS6 Avant and the Mercedes-AMG E63, but BMW has neglected to do the same. Since the BMW M5 wagon doesn’t exist, enthusiasts have to settle for the Alpina B5 Touring, which has recently been caught testing on the Nurburgring by spy photographers. Considering BMW hasn’t unveiled the all-new 5 Series just yet, this particular prototype shows just how close of a relationship Alpina has with BMW.

The spy photographers that caught the Alpina B5 Touring said that it was running some very quick laps, which shouldn’t come as a big surprise considering the standard Alpina B5 features a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 engine delivering 600 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque.

The new BMW 5 Series is expected to make its debut later this year, so don’t expect the Alpina B5 to formally debut until the second half of 2017 after the new M5 is revealed.
