It may be called a prototype, but this is basically the third-generation Acura RDX in the metal.

Making an appearance at the 2018 Detroit Auto Show, the 2019 Acura RDX rides on a brand-new, Acura-exclusive platform that is dramatically stiffer and lighter than the model it replaces. The wheelbase has also been stretched 2.5 inches and the crossover has a 1.2-inch wider track. The major news here is the Acura RDX is the first model to fully embrace the Japanese automaker’s new design language, which first debuted on the Precision Concept. It will also be the brand’s first crossover to be available in A-Spec trim, offering a sportier for shoppers.

2018 Detroit Auto Show Coverage

Powering the RDX will be a new 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, but output figures have not yet been revealed. Acura however, did say it will have 40 percent more low-end torque than the current 3.5-liter V6, which offers 279 horsepower and 252 pound-feet of torque. What has been confirmed is a 10-speed automatic transmission on all models.

Naturally, Acura’s torque-vectoring Super-Handling All-Wheel-Drive system will be offered, but it receives a newly-designed rear differential that promises to handle 40 percent more torque than before.

The 2019 Acura RDX is expected to launch around the middle of 2018, so expect more details closer to its arrival.
