A next-generation BMW X5 mule has been spied testing at the Nurburgring.

The 2018 BMW X5 mule was first spotted by spy photographers last winter and now that it has warmed up around the world, the German automaker has taken it out onto the Nurburgring. Although it is still a very early test mule that uses the current BMW X5’s body, the automaker is able to test its new platform without having to reveal much of its new design. The new platform is expected to help reduce weight thanks to lightweight materials such as aluminum and carbon fiber.

It is believed that the next-generation BMW X5 will become a sportier offering, as BMW prepares a range-topping X7 SUV that will appeal to those looking for more luxury and comfort. Rumors suggest that the new BMW X7 will not only be roomier but offer seating up to seven.

Expect to see more spy photos of the next-generation BMW X5 as the company continues testing, but since the model isn’t expected to make its debut for a couple more years, it might be a while until we see the new production body.
