A new variant is joining Chevrolet’s lineup of small cars, the Cruze Hatchback.

The hatchback has the same 106.3-inch wheelbase as the Cruze sedan and it offers 18.5 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seat and 42 cubic feet with the back seat folded down.

Power will come from a standard 1.4-liter turbocharged engine that uses direct injection and stop/start technology. In the Cruze sedan, this engine makes 153 horsepower and 177 lb-ft of torque, sent through a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic.

While the standard Cruze is available in four trim levels, the Cruze Hatchback will only be available in the top two, LT and Premier. Customers can opt for the special RS package, which brings along unique front and rear fascias, rocker panels, fog lamps and 18-inch wheels.

“With 9 percent market growth in small hatchbacks last year, it’s the perfect time to bring the Cruze Hatch to America,” said Alan Batey, president, General Motors North America and Global Chevrolet.

The 2017 Cruze Hatchback will go on sale in fall of 2016. It will make its official debut at the 2016 Detroit Auto Show.
