The 2016 BMW X1 has aced its crash tests.
The compact luxury crossover has received an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ Award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, its highest award. A redesign on the 2016 BMW X1 boosted its performance in the small overlap front crash test, while its new optional front crash prevention system helped it earn an advanced rating. The BMW X1 earned a good small overlap rating and in the test, and the driver’s space was maintained reasonably well, with maximum intrusion of about four inches at the lower door hinge pillar and at the instrument panel.
In the previous version of the BMW X1, intrusion reached 16 inches at the footwell, trapping the dummy’s right foot.

Like its predecessor, the 2016 BMW X1 received good ratings in the moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraint tests. As for its front crash prevention system, in track tests at 12 mph, impact speed was reduced by an average of 10 mph. In the 25-mph tests, impact speed was reduced by 7 mph. The system also includes a forward collision warning component that meets the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration criteria.
