To continue its sale momentum, Acura just revealed this intriguing new sedan at the Detroit Auto Show. While technically still a concept, the TLX is a thinly veiled production model.

This car is a double-whammy for Honda’s luxury brand; it’s designed to replace both the TL and the TSX. As a result it fits between the small ILX four-door and the flagship RLX. This gives Acura a clearly defined three-car lineup.

The TLX will be powered by one of two engines. The base unit is a new 2.4-liter direct-injected four-cylinder that’s supposedly “significantly lighter” than today’s powerplant of the same displacement. Additionally a 3.5-liter V6 will be available. Regrettably, output figures have not been shared at this time.

Arguably the biggest news about this car is not its updated engines but what they’re matched to. Acura is finally entering the 21st century by introducing some cutting-edge transmissions. The four-cylinder powerplant is paired with an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic while the V6’s dance partner is a brand-new nine-speed slushbox. Not surprisingly Acura is claiming the TLX will deliver best-in-class fuel economy.

The car is offered with either front- or all-wheel drive. The former comes with the brand’s Precision All-Wheel Steer technology, PAWS for short. This technology should deliver better on-road handling.

Not to be outdone, the brand’s famous Super-Handling All-Wheel Drive technology is available, though only on V6-powered models.

Outside this “concept” is painted is a cheerful color called Athletic Red Pearl. Big 20-inch wheels give it an aggressive look, as do the Jewel Eye LED headlamps. It’s a pretty eye-catching car.

Like other luxury sedans the new TLX should offer a wide range of features and amenities. Of course the latest safety technologies are available including things like lane departure warning, blind-spot assist and adaptive cruise control.

An official production version of the 2015 Acura TLX could debut as early as next month at the Chicago Auto Show. Now if it does you can bet we’ll be there bringing you all of the latest news.
