The problem: These engines are found to exhibit excessive oil consumption. Previously, the repair was to replace the piston rings. Now Subaru has determined that the only way to eliminate this problem is to replace the complete lower engine assembly (or shortblock).

Corrective action: On vehicles displaying excessive oil consumption, dealers will confirm the condition by performing a test. If the oil consumption is found to exceed normal levels, dealers will replace the shortblock assembly.
Warranty info: Repairs are being made under the new vehicle warranty or powertrain warranty, whichever applies. If an owner has a vehicle that is out of the warranty coverage but has an extended warranty, the repairs may be covered under the extended coverage. Dealers will have to confirm this with the extended warranty company.
What owners should do: Owners should call local dealers with their vehicle identification number to determine vehicle eligibility for this repair. Owners can also call Subaru at 800-782-2783. Reference TSB No. 02-157-14R.
