Vehicles Affected: Approximately 2,200 model-year 2006 BMW 325i, 325xi, 330i, 330xi, 525i, 525xi, 530i, 530xi and 550i luxury cars equipped with the Sport Seat option, and 525i, 525xi, 530i, 530xi and 550i luxury cars equipped with standard seats

The Problem: The front passenger seat occupant detection mat that determines if and how the passenger frontal airbag should deploy in a crash may fatigue and develop cracks, which could lead to a system failure. In a crash, such a failure would cause the front passenger airbag to be deactivated, increasing the risk of an injury.

The Fix: Dealers will repair or, as necessary, replace the occupant detection mat to eliminate the possibility that it may crack, for free.

What Owners Should Do: BMW will begin notifying owners Sept. 1. Owners can call the automaker at 800-525-7417, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236 or visit www.safercar.gov to check their vehicle identification number and learn more.
