BMW's 18th Art Car Embraces the Digital World

BMW has revealed its 18th art car, delving into the world of digital art thanks to Chinese artist Cao Fei.

Fei embraced the idea of a new age and the rapid change in our society along with the concept that light represents thoughts. It all comes together in this digital artwork, which consists of three different components.

There is a video showing a time-travelling spiritual practitioner, an augmented reality world that shows the light particles with the car, accessed through an app, and finally the car itself, which is finished in carbon black. In the video, the practitioner emits colorful streams of light, while when the app is used to view the car, the beautiful dancing lights are seen around the race car.

To get a real sense for the car, Cao Fei took a race driving course and worked closely with BMW engineers and designers.

This M6 GT3 uses a 4.4-liter turbocharged V8 that makes 585 horsepower, while the entire car weighs less than 2900 lbs. BMW racer Augusto Farfus will now take the 18th art car and run it at the FIA GT World Cup in Macau.
